RETREATS — $$$$
Short answer: A mix between technical instruction (that traditionally happens at workshops), and a getaway experience — all happening over a multi-day period.
For example: Maybe a particular venue, city, or state/country is inspiring. Maybe next-level activities that you can’t do at home are involved. Everything at a retreat tends to be a little more inspiring, empowering, and overall “extra.”
Benefits: Generally retreats last the longest out of these three options. They’re a great opportunity to relax/unwind, have intimate/deep conversations, deep-dive into subjects, and build community. Retreats tend to be “all-inclusive.”
WORKSHOPS — $$$
Short answer: An event that is focused on a specific skill, trade, or technique. It takes on a more educational approach or intensive learning experience.
For example: You’ll likely learn a notable skill or method to use while shooting. Usually attendees take away specific strategies for running a successful business or improving creativity skills. Like “you’re going to learn the 5 best methods to starting an elopement photography business.”
Benefits: You gain experience, you’re able to get hands on with trainings, and you can walk away with actionable educational content. Workshops can range from a few hours to multiple days.
CONTENT DAYS — $$
Short answer: A single day dedicated to portfolio building. They are usually a fast way to gain a lot of content quickly.
For example: There may be some training, education, or hands-on assistance, but it’s usually very minimal or none at all. There will likely multiple shoots, with a lots of styling and details, happening all in one day.
Benefits: If you want to build up your portfolio fast and don’t have a lot of time, these are the way to go! You can still network with other vendors & creatives, but the focus is on content building. They can range from a few hours to a full, single day. Content days tend to be “self-serve” with minimal inclusions.
CONTENT SERIES — Cost Varies
Short answer: A collection (can take on various forms) centered around a single theme, with a goal in mind. In photo/video context, the event could be a series of multiple content days.
For example: The theme might be “minimalism” or “the last frontier” and multiple shoots and/or educational content are created with a focus on the theme.
Benefits: For myself, content series include education, hands on training, multiple styled shoots, and opportunities for connection, networking, and community. They are fast-paced with minimal down time and you can walk away with a lot of value in a short time.
